As a company, we pride ourselves on prioritizing values like racial and gender equality, supporting consent culture, and welcoming everyone with accessible technology. As a company, and as team members, we support ways that workers are empowered, including labor unions.

While strikes can be disruptive, they often act as a catalyst for positive change. They bring attention to workers' grievances, mobilize public support, and push employers to address legitimate concerns. It is essential for the general public to recognize the significance of strikes as a collective act of courage and solidarity by union members.

ESPECIALLY NOW, labor unions remain essential pillars of protection for workers' rights and interests. Unions play a crucial role in advocating for fair wages, better working conditions, and improved benefits. One of the most powerful tools at their disposal is the strike, where union members collectively withhold their labor to assert their demands; which we’re seeing across several industries right now.

Why Labor Unions Are Crucial

Setting the standard: Union contracts, and the benefits they get for workers, can affect not just that one company or industry, but society as a whole. The reason many Americans work only 5 days a week, only 40 hours is the standard for full time, and overtime pay exists, is because unions work to establish humane working conditions.

Collective Bargaining Power: Unions unite workers, which amplify their collective voice when negotiating with employers. This results in better wages, benefits, and improved working conditions. More individual voices can create a larger impact.

Worker Protections: Unions advocate for and protect workers' rights, including fair treatment, nondiscrimination, and safe working environments. Union contracts often include grievance procedures to address workplace issues fairly and effectively.

Addressing Income Inequality: Labor unions have historically played a significant role in narrowing the income gap between the highest and lowest earners, fostering a more equitable society.

Legislative Advocacy: Unions lobby for labor-friendly policies and legislation, further strengthening workers' rights and social safety nets.

How You Can Show Solidarity

Supporting union members on strike is a show of solidarity that can make a significant difference in the success of their efforts.

Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about the issues driving the strike and the workers' demands. Understanding their perspectives will enable you to provide informed support and discuss the reasons for the strike with others.

Engage in Peaceful Demonstrations: If there are picket lines or peaceful demonstrations organized by striking workers, consider participating to show your support. These actions can be powerful visual symbols of solidarity.

Boycott or Patronize Ethically: Consider boycotting businesses that directly oppose workers' rights or patronize establishments that treat their employees fairly and ethically.

Spread Awareness: Use your platform, whether it's social media or personal conversations, to raise awareness about the strike and its objectives. Share accurate information to counter any misconceptions.

Financial Support: If possible, contribute to strike funds or support initiatives that provide financial assistance to striking workers and their families during challenging times. Many unions will have their own strike fund that will help striking employees meet their basic financial needs. The AFL-CIO has a great list.

Offer Assistance: Extend support by providing resources like food, childcare, or other necessary services to striking workers. These gestures can ease the burden and demonstrate genuine care.

Labor unions are pivotal in safeguarding workers' rights and promoting fair treatment in the workplace. Strikes are essential tools that empower union members to fight for better conditions and improved working standards. Supporting union members on strike demonstrates solidarity, empathy, and a commitment to a more equitable society. By standing together, we can bolster the collective strength of workers and help them achieve their rightful demands.
